Steel Shot | GP Angular Shot | Steel Grit | Features and Benefits

Wheelabrator Abrasives produces high quality cast steel shot and grit used for a wide range of applications, from sand removal for foundry products to shot peening in aeronautics industry.

Steel abrasive comes in round (shot) or angular (grit) form, ranging from 0.004 to 0.11 in. in size. It is produced by the atomization of molten steel, followed by a series of thermal and mechanical treatments in order to give the product is final characteristics.

The production process is highly controlled and the plant has recently upgraded to ISO 9001:2000 Registration.

Cast Steel Shot GP Angular Shot Cast Steel Grit
  • Hypereutectoid steel in a fully heat treated condition
  • Uniform structure of finely tempered martensite
  • The above combination provides optimum resilience and resistance to fatigue
  • Used to get a smoother peened surface
  • Starts out angular but quickly rounds-up into a ball

  • Produced by crushing specially heat treated shot pellets
  • Behavior performance depends on the hardness used:

GB - More aggressive than shot and GP Angular Shot
GL - Harder and more aggressive
    GH - Most aggressive
GR - Special Granite Cutting Product

"No Sodium Added" Abrasives

Wheelabrator Abrasive cast steel shot and grit is manufactured with no addition of cosmetic chemical coatings of any kind. No soluble salts, in form of nitrites or chlorides, are introduced into the manufacturing process. In fact, Wheelabrator's unique heat treatment methods of air quenching eliminate the potential of exposure to non-visible, soluble contaminants which may be present in alternate, water-quench practices.

Air quenching, as applied by Wheelabrator Abrasives, then provides contaminant-free surfaces and superior particle integrity with minimal stress crack presence.
